Candidate Transparency Guide

Company AI interview policies & disclosure guide

A transparent, continuously updated tracker of how Indian startups, unicorns, and multinational engineering centers evaluate AI assistance during hiring rounds. Practise ethically and disclose clearly.

The 4 Categories of Engineering Interview Rounds

Whether you can use AI depends heavily on the specific round of the hiring loop. Here is how modern technical hiring panels evaluate AI tools:

1. Take-Home Projects

Widely Encouraged

Most modern companies encourage AI assistance to scaffold code, write boilerplate, and speed up testing. Evaluators focus on your ability to defend architectural decisions, trade-offs, and test coverage in the follow-up review.

2. System Design Discussions

Verbal Discussion

System design is a collaborative verbal dialogue. Using AI to quickly check syntax or memory estimates is acceptable if disclosed, but interviewers evaluate your real-world battle-tested trade-offs and operational instincts.

3. Live Coding & Pair Programming

Ask Before Starting

Some engineering teams encourage GitHub Copilot / Cursor during live coding because it mirrors day-to-day work, while others prefer algorithmic whiteboard reasoning without AI. Always confirm with your interviewer at the start.

4. Online Proctored Assessments

Strictly Prohibited

Helpwing is strictly NOT for use in proctored examinations or recruitment tests. Our built-in ExamGuard™ automated shield detects and refuses execution on proctored platforms in compliance with the Public Examinations Act, 2024.

How to Disclose to Your Recruiter or Interviewer

Transparency establishes immediate technical maturity and professionalism. Here are sample disclosure templates you can adapt:

Email to Recruiter Prior to Live Coding

"Hi [Recruiter Name],

I am looking forward to our technical coding round on [Date]. In my day-to-day software development work, I actively use developer assistance tools (such as IDE code completion and AI syntax lookup) to accelerate routine boilerplate.

Does the engineering panel prefer a standard production environment where AI developer tools are permitted, or do they want this round conducted purely on a bare whiteboard without assistance? Either format works great for me—I just wanted to align with your team's preferred guidelines in advance."

Spoken Script at the Beginning of the Call

"Before we begin coding: I normally have developer copilot completion enabled in my local IDE. Are you comfortable with me using syntax assistance while discussing the logic out loud, or would you prefer I write plain code without any tool completions?"
